Acne and Diet: Foods You Should Never Eat and What to Take Instead
In general, people believe that there is a tight connection between acne and diet. Their belief is that certain foods may cause this skin problem. This is not entirely true. Food, regardless of how much fat it contains, cannot cause acne, but it certainly influences its development.
The foods rich in saturated fats and trans fats seem to worsen this skin condition even more. The other way around, consuming certain foods may lead to a significant improvement of the symptoms. In general, people opt for this treatment option before antibiotics and topical creams, as following a diet is much easier and sometimes, even cheaper.
It is very important to learn what foods to avoid and what foods to try in order to get rid of acne. Meats, dairy products and poultry are some of the foods that may contribute to oily skin because they contain high amounts of saturated fats and Trans fats.
Eating too much is believed to determine hormonal changes, but this specific relation between acne and diet does not have any scientific proof. The supposed effect of chocolate and candies is represented by more severe acne symptoms, but this was not proved, either.
Controlling acne is possible by increasing the protein intake. At least this is what most of the people believe. Maintaining the level of the carbohydrates in the diet at 60-70 percent is considered to be a rough decision.
Vitamin A and zinc have helped many people to get rid of acne. This is why it is very important to consume foods that contain these elements and to avoid foods that contain zinc antagonists. These foods decrease the zinc absorption. Therefore, it is important to avoid foods that are rich in calcium, copper and iron.
These are found in many fruits and vegetables. Nuts, seeds and beans, as well as several herbs could help people who suffer from acne.
Green tea, one of the most important antioxidants that are available, is known to decrease the androgen production. As acne is caused by a hormonal change, consuming green tea seems to improve the symptoms of acne.
Some people who suffer from acne reported that decreasing the iodine levels in their diets helped them to get rid of acne very fast. However, this effect has been observed in a limited number of people, so this does not represent a reliable solution to acne.
Chips, for example, contain an increased amount of iodized salt, so they can help acne to develop faster.
Other foods that make acne even worse are processed foods, yeasty foods, spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol, white rice, smoked fish, meat or cheeses, burnt food or foods that have been cooked on char, additives and preservatives. Grains and especially whole grains are also known to worsen the acne symptoms.
More than that, high glycemic foods such as potatoes can make acne worse. Acne is not the only facial problem that is influenced by high glycemic foods. Low glycemic foods are recommended since they do not provoke a rapid elevation of the insulin levels.
