Acne Fast Facts

Acne is a disease or condition that affects the oil glands of the skin. The pores (small holes in the skin) connect to the oil glands under the surface of the skin. These oil glands create an oily material called sebum. The glands connect to the pores through a small canal called a hair follicle.

Inside these follicles, dead skin cells are carried to the skin’s surface by this oil. This follicle also contains a single hair that grows out towards the surface of the skin.

When a follicle gets clogged it can produce a pimple. Pimples are most commonly found on the face, back, chest, neck and shoulders.

Even though acne is not life threatening, it can produce permanent scars. What causes acne to develop Most times, the skin cells, hair and sebum lump together into a plug. Bacteria in this plug can begin to swell.

As the plug breaks down, it forms a pimple. There are several kinds of pimples to consider. Here are some of the more common ones:

Whiteheads. These pimples are contained under the skin’s surface.

Blackheads. This type of pimple rises to the surface of the skin and are black in color. This black color is not caused by dirt but by the pigmentation of the skin. Papules. This type of pimple is a small pinkish bumpy, often tender to the touch.

Pustules. Red pimples with visible pus on the top or head of the pimple.

Nodules. Deep, painful, large, solid pimples. These are embedded deeply in the skin.

Cysts. These are the types of pimples that can cause scaring.

Who is effected by acne?

Since acne is such a common disease of the skin it can effect people in all age and race groups. Acne is most prevalent in young people and teenagers.

Acne effects 80 percent of people of the ages of 11 through 25. Most people will have an acne breakout sometime in their life. Even people as old as forty or fifty can get acne.

What is the main cause of acne? Know one knows for sure. Not even doctors.

These are the factors that may cause acne:

Heredity is a big one. If your parents or grandparents had acne, the chances are pretty good that you may have it too. Certain types of medicines and oily and greasy makeup may also contribute to acne break outs.

How can acne be treated? Acne can be treated by a dermatologist. This is a doctor that specializes in skin disorders.

Acne treatment helps to: Heal existing pimples and keep new one’s from forming and to prevent scarring. The best way to prevent scarring is with early treatment of your acne problem.

Your dermatologist may recommend prescription drugs for sever acne or over the counter medicine for more minor acne. Some common acne medications are topical. You rub them on the affected area of the skin. Some acne treatments are medicines such as pills that you ingest.

If your acne is very severe, you may have to use several types of acne medicine.

What is the best way to care for your skin if you have acne?

1. Gently clean your skin. Don’t use rough sponges.

2. Always use a mild cleanser, twice per day.

3. Do not scrub the skin while cleaning it. This will only make the problem worse.

4. Try not to touch your face with your hands. You never want to pinch, squeeze or pick at your pimples. This may cause scarring.

5. Shave carefully. Try not to cut the pimples. This also can cause scarring. Use a safety razor with just a single blade. Multiple bladed razors shave too closely and you’ll have a harder time not cutting the pimples.

Always soften your beard with a good shaving soap and water before shaving to help soften your whiskers.

Only shave when you have to. When you do, shave very lightly. Don’t get too much exposure to sun. While some sun is good, don’t get carried away.

Some acne medicines can make a person more likely to get a sunburn. Too much sun may increase the risk of skin cancer and cause the skin to wrinkle. Choose you makeup very carefully. Make sure you use an oil free variety.

Make sure the label says “noncomedogenic”. This just means that it won’t clog the pores on your skin.

Some people have such sensitive skin, they will still have problems when using makeup, no mater what kind it is.

Acne is a problem you can handle if you have the right information. Learn as much as you can about acne and you’ll be better prepared to chose the correct treatment for you.
