What Is Acne? – Acne Defined
You probably already know what acne is. Like most people, you probably have had it sometime in your life. But just in case you’d like a written definition of what acne is, here we go. Acne is a term used by dermatologists that means pimples, lumps or cysts and clogged pores that occur on the face, chest, back, neck, shoulders or upper arms.
Acne, though not limited to any age group, occurs most often in teenagers. It can even afflict adults in their thirties and forties. Acne takes many different forms, none of which are life threatening. The most severe cases can be disfiguring, leaving permanent scars. The changes to body tissue, or lesions, which acne causes are: papule, pustule, nodule, comedos and cyst.
These terms also refer to severity. Comedo, like blackheads and whiteheads being the mildest form, with nodules and cysts being the most severe. Acne affects most teens between the ages of 12 to 17. Mild cases of acne usually can be cleared up with an over the counter preparation.
Most of the time it just goes away with time as the person approaches their twenties. While acne affects both boys and girls, there are some distinctions.
Young men have a tendance to have more severe and long term acne. Young women can have intermittent but longer into their adulthood. This may be due to the use of cosmetics and hormonal changes.
